More About Carmel, Indiana

Carmel is one of the fastest growing cities in Indiana, located 20 miles from downtown Indianapolis, spanning 47 square miles across Clay Township in Hamilton County. The city’s picturesque mainstreet features an Art & Design district with galleries, speciality shops, and an urban winery. Carmel is known for a highly educated and affluent population with a thriving economy and low unemployment rate.

The city has a population of just over 90,000 with 125 acres of green paths, fishing lakes and gardens. Coxhall Gardens in particular is a favorite summer spot, featuring bike paths and live music. Carmel has become infamous for safe roads due to over 100 roundabouts (more than any other city in the U.S.) which have replaced traditional four-way intersections. Art is alive in Carmel, with The Palladium – a world-class internationally-renowned concert hall – anchoring the Center for the Performing Arts campus. The schedule features symphony orchestras, country stars, jazz bands and more.

Carmel was established in 1837 by Quakers John Felps, Alexander Mills, Seth Green and Daniel Warren. The city’s economy was supported by fur trading, and the tracks of the Monon Railroad were laid throughout Carmel is 1882, and the train depot was open until 1974. Today, the tracks have transformed into The Monon Trail, a pedestrian thoroughfare for bikers, runners, dog walkers and move. The path travels north to Westfield or south to Indianapolis, boasting breweries, ice cream parlors, local eateries and more.

Today, Carmel has become a hub for education, entrepreneurship and retail. Carmel Clay Schools has won many academic awards, accommodating more than 14,500 students and boasting a 97% high school graduation rate. Livability.com ranks Carmel as one of the top 50 cities in America for entrepreneurs, with several large employers headquartered in the city including Allegion, CNO Financial Group and GEICO. Major shopping centers like Clay Terrace, Old Town Carmel and Village Park Plaza are frequented by locals and visitors alike.

A growing number of developments welcomes a continued surge in population, including a younger population starting their careers and families, along with those who are in the nesting phase of life. Carmel’s combination of safe neighborhoods, ease of transportation, low taxes and excellent schools has earned it the #1 place to live in America by CNN Money Magazine in 2012.

  • review rating 5  Personal and professional, everyone always takes great care of my sensitive mouth teen! This is our first experience with needing orthodontia, when it’s time for my youngest to get braces, we’ll choose this place again in a heartbeat. From the team up front to the team in the back, everyone is so nice and yet so efficiently on task, it is quite impressive. They have reasonable pricing and are willing to help with a payment plan. Keep up the great work!!

  • review rating 5  This 64 year old had teeth that had begun to overlap in my adult years, which was attributed to having 4 good teeth removed as a child for "Crowded teeth". I waited to fund Invisalign until incurring no penalty for taking IRA funds, other than taxes. I was fortunate to be referred to Dr. Jason Bunch by my dentist, Dr. Jack Nicewander. Dr. Bunch and his Carmel, IN office staff see numerous children and young adults, but welcome the young at heart as well. I trust them and find them accommodating, efficient, professional and compassionate.
